Ralf Dietrich Rangnick was born on 29 June 1958 in Backnang, West Germany. After a modest playing career as a midfielder in the amateur ranks, Rangnick transitioned into coaching.

Rangnick's managerial career began to take shape at Hannover 96, where he guided the team to promotion to the Bundesliga in 1998. He subsequently enjoyed successful stints at VfB Stuttgart and Schalke 04, earning a reputation for his innovative tactical approach and emphasis on attacking football.
