Bernard Hill Dies at 79
Actor Known for 'Titanic' and 'Lord of the Rings'
Bernard Hill, who played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film Titanic and King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died at age 79, his agent Lou Coulson confirmed. Hill died early on Sunday morning, the BBC reports.
A Versatile Career
Hill was born in Manchester, England, on December 17, 1944. He began his acting career in the theater, appearing in productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He made his film debut in 1971 in the movie Gumshoe.
Hill went on to appear in more than 100 films and television shows throughout his career. In addition to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, he also had notable roles in Gandhi (1982), Full Metal Jacket (1987), and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003).
Hill's death is a loss for the acting community and for fans of his work. He will be remembered as a talented and versatile actor who brought memorable characters to life.
