Chicago's Newest Skyscraper Underway at 400 Lake Shore Drive

Over 15 Years After the Chicago Spire Proposal, a New Development is Finally Taking Shape

Construction teams in Chicago have begun work on the foundation for a new 72-story skyscraper designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Images show workers filling the giant foundation hole that will eventually support the massive structure.

The new skyscraper is located at 400 Lake Shore Drive, just north of the Chicago River. It will be the second tallest building in Chicago, after the Willis Tower. The skyscraper is expected to be completed in 2027.

The design of the new skyscraper is inspired by the Art Deco skyscrapers of the 1920s and 1930s. However, it also features modern elements, such as a glass curtain wall and a rooftop garden.
