Rafael Nadal Withdraws From Wimbledon
22-Time Grand Slam Champion Announces on Social Media
Missed Opportunity for Calendar Grand Slam
Tennis star Rafael Nadal has announced that he will not compete at Wimbledon, a blow to his hopes of achieving a calendar Grand Slam. Nadal, who has won 22 major titles, revealed the news on social media on Thursday.
The Spaniard's withdrawal comes after he suffered an abdominal injury during his quarterfinal victory over Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon. Nadal had a medical timeout during the third set but battled through to win in four sets.
Nadal's decision to pull out of Wimbledon is a significant setback in his quest to become the first man to win all four Grand Slams in a single year since Rod Laver in 1969. Nadal had won the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year and was aiming to add Wimbledon and the US Open to his collection.
